Hartmut Ginnow-Merkert was born in the Ruhr Valley industrial region of Germany in 1947. He studied electronic engineering and industrial design, and after several years of working as an industrial designer in Germany, he accepted a teaching position in Bogotá, Colombia, from where he moved on to Minneapolis (U.S.A.) for another professorship. After a total of 14 years abroad, Hartmut returned to his native country to teach experimental design in Germany's capital city, Berlin. Hartmut retired in 2012 when he started a program of environmental education, inviting high school and university students to build and race solar-powered electric boats. A second initiative led to the preservation of Germany's oldest human-made waterway, the Finow Canal. In April 2024 he was awarded the European Prize of the State of Brandenburg for his outstanding commitment. He lives in a region not far from where his grandfather made a living as a fisherman on the Dziwna River in Pomerania.

A former president of Inland Waterways International, David Edwards-May is editor of its magazine World Wide Waterways, while continuing to work as an international consultant on inland waterways. He was co-founder of IWI in 1992. Employed by French consulting engineers SOGREAH from 1976 to 1990, he carried out studies of inland waterways development, primarily for tourism: e.g. the Canal du Midi, the River Lot and the canals of Northern France. He later founded Euromapping and published the first edition of the European Waterways Map in 1993; the sixth edition was published by Imray in 2021. He was technical coordinator of the EU-funded transnational research project Terra-VEV, to explore opportunities for the regeneration and promotion of historic canals throughout Europe (1998-2002). He has chaired two PIANC working groups, one on standards for the use of inland waterways by recreational craft (1997-2000), the other on the extended values of low-use inland waterways (2000-2024). He has been involved in the Seine-Nord Europe Canal project since the preliminary studies in the 1990s, and continues to work on communication in coordination with the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe, which is currently building the canal.

Po rozpoczęciu pracy w Ministerstwie Infrastruktury w 2002 r. w Departamencie Transportu Morskiego była odpowiedzialna za programowanie inwestycji poprawiających dostęp do portów morskich,

W latach 2005-2011 zajmowała się poprawą konkurencyjności transportu morskiego, opracowaniem strategii transportu morskiego oraz polityki morskiej. W 2011 r. została zastępcą dyrektora Departamentu Transportu Morskiego. Przez 5 lata koordynowała sprawy polityki morskiej, rozwoju portów morskich oraz żeglugi morskiej i śródlądowej do czasu objęcia stanowiska Dyrektora Departamentu Żeglugi Śródlądowej w 2016 r. Następnie w 2018r. została powołana na stanowisko dyrektora Departamentu Gospodarki Wodnej i Żeglugi Śródlądowej.

Founded in 2024 BlueCharge was tasked with the the mission of creating a accessible large scale sustainable charging infrastructure for marinas and caravans. 
Harald, a mechanical engineer, was born in Stuttgart in 1956 he founded Kuhnle Tours a boat rental company in 1981. The company portfolio now includes various marinas and restaurants as well as a shipyard. He is considered one of the pioneers of German water tourism.

Rebecca Hughes serves as executive deputy director for the New York State Canal Corporation, a subsidiary of the New York Power Authority (NYPA). As a senior executive, Rebecca has developed and championed the agency’s strategic vision for Canal Revitalization, a long-range plan to ensure that the historic New York State Canal System remains structurally secure and economically vital as it enters its third century of operation.  Her teams are responsible for public and government relations across the 524-mile Canal System as well as the $300 million Reimagine the Canals economic development initiative.  Rebecca’s work is driven by building coalitions through open dialog and transparent communication. 
Prior to focusing on the Canal Corporation, Rebecca led marketing and consumer engagement programs for several business units at NYPA.  These included NY Energy Manager, for the delivery of energy management and advisory services to commercial customers, and EVolve NY, to build a public electric vehicle charging network across New York State. Before joining NYPA in 2017, Rebecca was responsible for administration of the Career Pathways program at the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

I, Rituparna Acharyya, a young researcher, am currently pursuing my Ph.D. at Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz, Poland. My current research is focused on assessing the changes in riverine fluxes across river deltaic estuaries of Global North and South due to climate change via application of hydrological and geospatial modelling, along with remote sensing data. Previously, I have completed my master's degree (M.Sc.) in Geoinformatics and Applied Geography from Central University of Karnataka, India. In addition, I have research experience in the following domains: hydrodynamic modelling of riverine processes (erosion, accretion, sediment fluxes); modelling of estuarine processes via statistical modelling; multi-hazard assessment using remote sensing and geospatial data.

His firm has worked with the United Nations, the US National Park Service, the Government of Tunisia, the US State Department, and many other public and private clients. He was elected president of the International Union of Architects (UIA), representing the world’s 3.2 million architects, and as president of the 98,000-member American Institute of Architects (AIA). He was a research affiliate with the MIT Laboratory of Architecture and Planning and studied architecture at Washington University and the University of Wisconsin. His keynote address at the World Canals Conference 2022 in Leipzig was published in the journal "WasserWirtschaft."

Sharon Leighton (US) is the current President of Inland Waterways International (IWI). She has served the IWI Council and membership for nine years in various capacities. Her accomplishments on Council include leading the effort to launch a new website, develop a mission focused Strategic Framework, and serve on the IWI/PIANC partner project to publish international “Guidelines for Tourism Infrastructure on Inland Waterways”.
Sharon is a community development expert with demonstrated success in establishing strategic support from a wide range of diverse stakeholders.  She has over four decades of experience implementing tourism, heritage, and recreation projects on canals and inland waterways in her home state of New York and around the world.  She is retired from the NYS Canal Corporation where she oversaw several phases of multi-million-dollar canal revitalization programs.
Sharon was Chair of the 2017 World Canals Conference in Syracuse NY, where she and the 2017 WCC team brought together over 400 canal enthusiasts from three continents for a premier experience.  She is the owner of Khione Consulting, a project management consulting firm specializing in canal related development and strategic planning.

I worked as supervisor engineer and project designer in companies and I was owner of construction and structure project design company which especially designed industrial-agricultural reinforced concrete and steel structures from 2016 to 2021. Duncan Hay is a historian with the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), a program of the National Park Service (NPS). Previously he served as a hydropower licensing specialist for the NPS and as historian with Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. He wrote the nomination that led to the designation of 724 km and 524 structures of the New York State Canal System as a National Historic Landmark. He selected historic images and wrote text for more than fifty interpretive wayside exhibits in canal communities across the state. A life-long paddler, he contributed to the New York State Canalway Water Trail Guide and was project manager for the hand-launch facility guidelines. 

He has also worked for the NPS Northeast Museum Services Center, National Building Museum in Washington, DC, New York State Museum, Museum of American Textile History, Lowell National Historical Park, the New York Public Service Commission, and the Water Resources Division of US Geological Survey.  

With special interests in water and industrial history, he has published on the history of waterpower and urbanization, canals, rural industrialization, and hydroelectric power; organized exhibits on manufacturing, transportation, construction, and the conservation movement; written and implemented historic furnishing plans for the machine shops at Thomas Edison’s laboratory in West Orange, NJ; and worked with preservation organizations and industry groups on the documentation, preservation, and interpretation of industrial and engineering sites throughout the US. 

Duncan earned a M.A. and Ph.D. in the History of Technology from the University of Delaware’s Hagley Program in the History of Industrial America and a B.A. in Geography from the State University of New York at Oneonta.

Joseph Moloughney is the Eastern Region Canal Engineer for the New York State Canal Corporation.  He was hired by the Corporation in 2009 as the Hudson River PCB Dredging Program Coordinator and subsequently served as the Corporation’s Director of Environmental Affairs.  Prior to joining the Corporation, Mr. Moloughney served in a number of positions in his almost 30 years of service in the State of New York, including engineering positions at the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Health.  Mr. Moloughney also served as the Albany Division Director for the NYS Thruway from 2015 to 2017, before returning to the Canal Corporation in his current position.  Mr. Moloughney received his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering and his Master of Science in Environmental Management and Policy from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Dr. Katarzyna Kubiak-Wójcicka works at the Department of Hydrology and Water Management at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Alberto Bosino (Vigevano, 28/4/1992) is an Italian geomorphologist expert in soil erosion forms and features. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Geological Sciences and a master’s degree in Applied Geological Sciences with Honors from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Pavia (IT), where he subsequently also obtained a PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences with Excellent rating.
At the age of 29 he became a researcher in Physical Geography and Geomorphology at the Department of Environmental and Earth Sciences of the University of Milan-Bicocca (IT). Author of various scientific publications, he also published a book on field geomorphological mapping. He currently works integrating geomorphological mapping with qualitative and quantitative field observations. 

Mgr inż. Daria Jasińska to asystent naukowo-badawczy na Wydziale Budownictwa, Architektury i Inżynierii Środowiska Politechniki Bydgoskiej. Jej praca inżynierska skupiała się na analizie kładek dla pieszych, co stanowi ważny aspekt w projektowaniu infrastruktury miejskiej. Mr. Wang Shi actively promotes corporate social responsibility and practices sustainable environmental development. He has participated continuously in 14 United Nations Climate Change Conferences on behalf of Chinese entrepreneurs and devoted to the establishment of the Alashan SEE Entrepreneur Ecology Association, One Foundation, One Planet Nature Foundation and Foundation of Xi’an Rural Development. He also serves as the core leader of many international organizations and charity organizations.
Since 2011, Mr. Wang Shi has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University, Cambridge University, Oxford University and Hebrew University, as well as visiting professor in many institutions of higher learning. He loves sports and has been the eleventh person in the world who successfully completed ‘climbing the highest peaks in seven continents and crossing the Arctic and Antarctic’ expedition. Now he is making great efforts to promote rowing in China and was elected president of the Asian Rowing Federation in 2014. In 2018, he has been honored with honorary president of Asian Rowing Federation.
In 2017, Mr. Wang Shi founded DeepRock Group, the core business of which is to provide comprehensive solutions of city carbon neutral community, to promote sports and healthy lifestyle, and to conduct green finance investment.
